What is Canicross?
Canicross is a great sport and a very effective way to create a great bond between you and your dog. The sport is set up so that the dog is attached to its owner by the waist while walking or running. Your dog is attached to the you by means of a harness, a canicross belt that wraps around your waist, and a lead line.

The History of Canicross
The word canicross is a combination of the words canine and cross country.  The date that this activity was officially named is uncertain due to the fact that people have performed it for years with their dogs as a leisure activity.  The very first Canicross World Championships were held in 2002 at Ravenna, Italy.

Canicross as an Activity
I love canicross for the simple reason of exercising my high energy Pit Bull.  I found that this activity is a perfect solution for her need to pull and run.  I don't want her to believe that pulling is a good thing when she goes on walks, but I do understand that because of her inherent desire to pull canicross is a great release for her.  So I've made it clear to her that the harness is for running and the collar is for walking.  Canicross is great for her health and also keeps me of the couch.

As a suggestion to anyone looking to take this activity up with their dog, try to start slow and work your way up to longer runs in more distracting places.  I would find a dirt trail or secluded area similar to the one in the above picture to start so you can see how your dog will react to the activity and so you learn to read his/her body language.  Once you believe you can control your dog with other distractions around, then take your dog to a more public area like a park or neighborhood.

Canicross is much like Bikejoring, except that there is not a bike involved. Canicross is also comparable to Skijoring, except that with Skijoring there is snow and skis involved.
